Abstract

Vitamin B12 is an essential nutrient for the proper functioning of the body. Furthermore, scientific studies have suggested a possible relationship between vitamin B12 deficiency and the occurrence of mood disorders, such as major depressive disorder. The present study aimed to verify the prevalence of vitamin B12 dosage among adults, and to evaluate the relationship between reported B12 levels and the presence or absence of major depressive disorder. The evaluated sample consisted of 145 participants who answered a structured questionnaire. Major depressive disorder was assessed using the Patient Health Questionnaire-9 instrument. Results: The average age was 28.64 ±11.75 years, ranging between 18 and 66 years. The mean BMI was 23.79± 3.78 kg/m2, indicating eutrophy. The results provided by the PHQ-9 indicate that in the sample analyzed, the majority presented minimal and mild disorder. Regarding the dosage of vitamin B12, the majority 73.8% reported having already dosed the vitamin, but only 40% are in the habit of dosing the vitamin regularly. The average vitamin B12 level in the evaluated sample of those who reported the value was 362.11 ± 147.16 pg/mL. 53.8% reported not using vitamin B12 supplementation, however, when using supplementation, 88.9% reported feeling better with the use of vitamin B12. Given the above, it can be inferred that in the sample evaluated, major depressive disorder is common among young people and that the dosage of vitamin B12 is a parameter to be considered in monitoring, considering its modulation on the nervous system and influence on disorders of humor.
