Abstract

Introduction: Short bowel syndrome is a complex and challenging gastrointestinal condition, particularly due to the significant reduction in the functional capacity of the small intestine to absorb nutrients and liquids. This condition can be caused by a variety of reasons, including extensive bowel resections, trauma, or other conditions that require abdominal surgery. Therefore, a surgical approach to short bowel syndrome is crucial to improving the quality of life and nutritional capacity of patients, being a field in constant evolution with techniques that aim to increase the capacity of the remaining intestine to absorb nutrients and liquids. Objective: Review and analyze the surgical approaches used in the treatment of Short Bowel Syndrome. Methodology: The Cochrane, Scielo and Google Scholar databases were used, searching for articles published between 2010 and 2018, in Portuguese or English. Final Considerations: SIC surgeries aim to increase the capacity of the remaining intestine to absorb nutrients and liquids, thus improving the patient's quality of life. Among the techniques used are intestinal lengthening, reversal of intestinal shunts and, in extreme cases, intestinal transplantation. The choice of surgical approach depends on the extent of intestinal resection, the adaptation of the remaining intestine, and the patient's individual needs. It is essential that the treatment is personalized and involves a multidisciplinary team to ensure the best long-term results.
