Abstract

The objective of this study is to provide a review of the main concepts of CAD, in addition to exposing the best therapy for the condition, according to the usual literature. And, in the background, show the pathophysiology of the disease. The present study is a narrative review of a critical and analytical nature, in research on the main concepts regarding metabolic ketoacidosis, in addition to management. A review of articles was carried out in the databases Medical Literature Analysis and Retrievel System Online (MEDLINE), Scientific Electronic Library Online (SciELO), Literatura Latino-Americana e do Caribe em Ciências da Saúde (LILACS), Directory of Open Access Journals ( DOAJ) and PubMed, with the following Health Sciences Descriptors (DeCS): Ketoacidosis; Diabetes mellitus; Management. In the case of metabolic ketoacidosis, it is a serious complication associated with diabetes mellitus, presenting potentially fatal conditions if managed incorrectly or late. The therapeutic approach consists of using 0.9% saline solution intravenously, correcting hypokalemia, intravenous insulin therapy if pH is less than 7 and, in specific cases, administering intravascular sodium bicarbonate. Early identification of the condition is crucial for the prognosis, in order to avoid irreversible complications. However, prevention through educational strategies against diabetes is more effective in combating the disease. In addition to more clinical research and multidisciplinary actions to maximize positive results for affected patients.
