Abstract

INTRODUCTION: AIDS is the disease caused by the Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV). The clinical manifestations resulting from the infection depend on the individual response and the intensity of viral replication, covering a wide spectrum of signs and symptoms. Epidemiological surveillance in Brazil showed increased rates of reported AIDS hospitalizations. OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study is to demonstrate data related to AIDS, in Brazil and its regions, during the years 2019-2023. METHODS: This is an ecological study, carried out based on data collection by the SUS Hospital Information System (SIH/SUS), made available by the secondary database of the Department of Informatics of the Unified Health System (TABNET/DATASUS) . The data obtained referred to hospitalizations for AIDS in Brazil in the period between January 2019 and December 2023. From them, descriptive statistical analyzes were carried out based on the following sociodemographic variables: regions, race and sex. RESULTS: The results showed that the regions where hospitalizations predominate are: the Northeast and Southeast Regions; there is a higher prevalence of hospitalizations in males and mixed race, the race with the lowest hospitalization rate is indigenous. It was observed from the analysis of the cases that there is a predominance of hospitalizations in the younger population (between 20 and 49 years old). DISCUSSION AND CONCLUSION: Based on the data analyzed, the Northeast region presented the highest number of AIDS cases in the period defined by the study, followed by the Southeast region. The lowest numbers were presented by the Central-West region. Therefore, complementary studies are relevant, and it is important to highlight the need for improvements in initiatives for HIV infection control strategies and adequate treatment of the population.
