Abstract

Leukemia is the most frequent neoplasm found in the pediatric age group and is associated with several comorbidities arising from the course of the disease. Therefore, it is important that pediatric patients are assisted by a specialized interprofessional team, in order to minimize the negative effects of the disease during its development. This review has the objective, to point out the most prevalent types of leukemia in the pediatric age group and how they impact the development of the child-juvenile group affected by this disease. As it’s central theme, this work seeks to address the importance of interprofessional monitoring in view of the possibility of comprehensive care that  guarantees the best quality of life in the young-adult phase of the pediatric leukemic patient in question.

Through qualitative research, the Scielo and PubMed databases were consulted, including national and international articles. The descriptors used were: Leukemia and historical, Leukemia and teenagers, Leukemia and adolescent, Leukemia and children and consequence, Acute myeloid leukemia and children, “Leukemia obesity” and “Leukemia treatment effects”. From these, 15 articles were selected for this review. Furthermore, the book Treaty of Pediatrics, Vol. 2 (5th edition) and the Orientation Manual of the Scientific Department of Adolescence (2019-2021) by the Brazilian Society of Pediatrics were widely used.

In the selected articles, important records were found between patients with leukemia and neurocognitive disorders, obesity, hypertension and psychological trauma. Through the study carried out, the need for a interprofessional follow-up during the development of the patients in question was identified.

In summary, in this study, we observed that it is important to address care strategies and continuous monitoring by means of a specialized and capable team that encompasses all aspects of child development in patients affected by ALL and AML, with the aim of making the path from these to adult life more endurable.
