Abstract

Inguinal hernia is a common condition in which part of tissue, often a loop of intestine, bulges through a weakness in the abdominal wall in the groin area. Thus, there are several medical approaches available for surgical repair of inguinal hernia, including open and laparoscopic techniques. Therefore, the choice of approach depends on several factors, such as the surgeon's experience, patient preference, characteristics of the hernia and underlying medical conditions. This review addresses the different medical approaches to surgical repair of inguinal hernia, discussing the indications, techniques, results and complications associated with each of them. Objective: To investigate the effectiveness and safety of different medical approaches in the surgical repair of inguinal hernia. Methodology: The Cochrane, Scielo and Medline databases were used, searching for articles published between 2022 and 2024, in Portuguese or English. Final Considerations: The comparative study between pre-peritoneal transabdominal laparoscopic surgical repair of inguinal hernia using sutured repair versus the use of a tacker demonstrated no significant differences in terms of recurrence rate, postoperative complications or recovery time. Both techniques have been shown to be effective and safe for the treatment of inguinal hernia, suggesting that the choice between the two approaches can be based on individual patient considerations and surgeon preferences.
