Abstract
Introduction: Basic Life Support (BLS) is an initial intervention carried out by rescuers and healthcare professionals to maintain life and stabilize patients in medical emergency situations. This approach consists of simple but essential techniques that aim to maintain blood circulation and tissue oxygenation until more advanced medical care can be administered. Objective: This study aims to describe the relevance of BLS in the first response to emergencies, addressing its main techniques, the training necessary for its application and its impact on patient survival. Methodology: This study consists of a literature review on the importance of basic life support in the first response to medical emergencies carried out in March 2024, based on an integrative review of the scientific literature in the SciELo database. Results and discussion: The importance of basic life support in maintaining vital functions during emergency situations is evident, including cardiopulmonary resuscitation, airway clearance and hemorrhage control. Furthermore, evidence shows that the appropriate application of BLS significantly increases survival rates in cases of cardiorespiratory arrest and other emergencies. Conclusion: BLS plays a crucial role in the initial response to medical emergencies, being essential to preserve patients' lives until the arrival of advanced care. By emphasizing the importance of constantly updating CPR guidelines and access to equipment such as automated external defibrillators, we further strengthen the community's ability to respond effectively to medical emergencies.
