Abstract

The increase in the consumption of meat foods has encouraged livestock farming to adopt intensive technologies, such as the use of antimicrobials. However, due to such abuse and indiscriminate use in animal production, bacterial resistance, especially in Escherichia coli, threatens human health. A 67% increase in the use of these drugs is estimated by 2030, with antimicrobial resistance (AMR) being a global concern, requiring continued surveillance and control strategies. Alternative management measures, such as outdoor rearing, have proven effective. This study addresses the relationship between the use of antimicrobials and bacterial resistance, aiming to guide public health policies. The present work carried out an integrative review of the literature on the impact of antimicrobial resistance of Escherichia coli in domestic animals intended for human consumption. 9 articles were selected after a rigorous search and selection, covering studies published in the last 8 years. The results highlighted the alarming prevalence of resistance in several sources, with an emphasis on pigs. The use of antimicrobials has been identified as an influential factor in this process, with classes such as tetracycline, sulfamethoxazole and ampicillin being frequently associated with resistance. Horizontal gene transfer has been identified as an important mechanism in the spread of resistance, posing a significant risk to public health as these pathogens can be transmitted through the food chain. Antimicrobial resistance in E. coli has been recognized as a threat to public health and animal production, requiring urgent measures to control its spread. This includes implementing more careful management measures, such as reducing unnecessary use of antibiotics, investing in alternatives such as probiotics and prebiotics, and improving hygiene conditions on farms. Continuous research, awareness about the responsible use of antibiotics and collaboration between different sectors of society are essential to face this challenge and ensure the effectiveness of antimicrobial treatments for future generations.
