Abstract
Postpartum haemorrhage is one of the most serious and potentially fatal obstetric complications faced by women after giving birth. Characterized by excessive blood loss after a baby is born, this condition poses a significant threat to maternal health worldwide. Assessment of the epidemiological profile of postpartum haemorrhage in Brazil is of utmost importance for maternal and public health. This analysis reveals crucial information about the incidence, risk factors, occurrence patterns and temporal trends of this serious obstetric complication. Understanding the epidemiological panorama not only helps in identifying groups with greater vulnerability, but also serves to guide the implementation of more effective preventive measures and clinical interventions. Therefore, the objective of this work was to build an epidemiological panorama of hospitalizations caused by postpartum haemorrhage in Brazil, from 2020 to 2023. This is an ecological time series study, which used data from the Hospital Information System (SIH) from DATASUS. This comprehensive source offers a detailed overview of hospitalizations in the northern region of Brazil. Through this study, we demonstrated a 10% reduction in hospitalizations caused by postpartum haemorrhage in Brazil, with the Southeast being responsible for the majority of hospitalizations and hospital costs. Furthermore, we identified that brown women aged between 20 and 29 years were the most affected. The discussion about hospitalizations for postpartum haemorrhage is essential to address issues related to maternal health, quality of obstetric care and access to health services.
