Abstract
Introduction: Endodontic treatment is fundamental to preserving oral health, but the anatomical complexity of the Root Canal System (SRC) presents challenges in its disinfection. Sodium Hypochlorite (NaOCl) and Chlorhexidine (CHX) are commonly used, but their properties vary, highlighting the need to investigate efficacy and safety in each case. Objective: to analyze and compare the effectiveness of chlorhexidine and sodium hypochlorite as irrigants during endodontic treatment. Methodology: This study is an integrative literature review that uses a qualitative and exploratory approach to synthesize information on the topic. Using databases such as Medline, Lilacs and BBO-Odontologia via VHL, with the following descriptors: Sodium Hypochlorite; Chlorhexidine; Efficiency and Endodontics in an associated way using the following Boolean operators: AND and OR. After carrying out two search strategies, we obtained a sample of 360 articles, which after applying the inclusion and exclusion criteria decreased to 115. After reading the abstract and title of the articles, 10 were selected for the construction of this work. Results: NaOCl, despite its antimicrobial efficacy, presents tissue improvements and potential for accidents. CHX, on the other hand, offers antimicrobial action, biocompatibility and substantivity, but does not dissolve organic matter. Studies indicate that both are specific in SCR specifications, although their advantages and limitations vary in different contexts. Conclusion: Both hypochlorite and chlorhexidine have advantages and advantages, and the choice should be based on an assessment of the properties of each agent and the specific needs of the patient.
