Abstract

Introduction: Advanced maternal age is classified as pregnant individuals aged 35 or older and is a growing reality worldwide. Currently, motherhood is postponed due to increased female participation in society and the influence of the feminist movement on the decision to have children. However, this situation impacts the occurrence of complications during pregnancy, as age is considered a determining factor in the likelihood of negative outcomes. This literature review provides an analysis and synthesis of the risks posed to both the pregnant individual and the fetus by advanced maternal age. Objective: To examine the relationship between advanced maternal age and risks during pregnancy. Method: A literature review of studies related to late pregnancy and risks published in the last 5 years in English and Portuguese. Selected articles were obtained through a data search based on a guiding question on platforms such as Google Scholar, Virtual Health Library (BVS), Scientific Electronic Library Online (SciELO), National Library of Medicine (PubMed), and EbscoHost. Result: The study revealed an association between advanced maternal age and significant complications during pregnancy, such as preeclampsia, gestational diabetes, occurrence of preterm birth and cesarean section, hemorrhages, and low birth weight. Conclusion: Based on the studies reviewed, it can be affirmed that delaying motherhood increases the risk of complications during pregnancy. Pregnant individuals should be aware of the various risks associated with advanced age and undergo prenatal consultations correctly as recommended by the health ministry to reduce the negative effects of this process.
