Abstract

Introduction: ADHD is a disorder characterized by symptoms such as inattention, impulsivity and hyperactivity. In this way, the imbalances presented make it difficult to maintain healthy habits, favoring the development of childhood obesity disorder. Objective: This study sought to assess the quality of life and health of children with ADHD, highlighting the relationship between this disorder and the development of childhood obesity.
Methodology: This is an exploratory integrative literature review on the relationship between ADHD and childhood obesity. The PICO strategy was used to develop the guiding question, which made it possible to cross-reference descriptors relating ADHD, childhood obesity, BMI and drug treatment. The search was carried out in the following databases: Google Scholar; Virtual Health Library (VHL), Scientif Electronic Library Online (SciELO), National Library of Medicine (PubMed) and EbscoHost. Results and discussions: The articles analyzed highlighted the multifactorial nature of ADHD and the influence of lifestyle habits on the increased BMI of children with the disorder. They also discussed the positive effects of using psychostimulant drugs to treat symptoms. Conclusion: This study concludes that the symptoms of ADHD have short- and long-term effects, which can contribute to overweight in children. Thus, correct diagnosis and appropriate treatment can help improve the nutritional conditions of affected children.
