Abstract
Introduction: Chronic Non-Communicable Diseases such as Diabetes Mellitus. DM is a disease characterized by impaired glucose metabolism, resulting in chronic hyperglycemia. It is divided into Type 1 Diabetes, Type 2 Diabetes, gestational Diabetes and other specific types. The world is currently facing an epidemic of DM cases, with emphasis on DM2. However, despite advances in treatment, DM remains the fifth leading cause of death in the world. Objective: The article aims to provide an epidemiological analysis of the distribution and impacts of Diabetes Mellitus in Brazil and its macro-regions, from January 2014 to June 2024. Methodology: This is a retrospective epidemiological study with a quantitative and temporal approach, with data regarding the prevalence and impacts of hospitalizations in the period from 2014 to 2024, in the five Brazilian regions. Results: Among 1,404,295 cases, it was possible to observe the prevalence of the Southeast region in terms of the number of hospitalizations and deaths, when compared to other regions of the country. In terms of average length of stay per hospitalization, the North region stands out, with an average of 6.8 days, compared to 6.6 in the Southeast region. In addition, in relation to the age group, a higher number was recorded between 60 and 69 years old. Conclusion: In this sense, the results of this study showed that diabetes mellitus is an extremely present and worrying health problem in today's society. Therefore, epidemiological studies are important to strengthen health care for people with DM, as they identify cases and risk factors for the disease, and assist in the future perspective of preventing chronic non-communicable diseases.
