Resumo
Este artigo tem por objetivo revisar a literatura a partir da consulta de artigos científicos nacionais e internacionais. Trata-se de uma revisão integrativa utilizando como base de dados a BVS, a SciELO, o LILACS e o PubMed, nos últimos 5 anos. Foram avaliados 252 artigos sobre o tema com ênfase em uma síntese dos conhecimentos mais recentes e de maior consistência científica. Conclui-se que os estudos trouxeram informações acerca da etiologia, caracterização citopatológica, complicações associadas, assistência aos indivíduos acometidos por essa condição, além de medidas educativas como estratégia preventiva e de conscientização no combate a esta patologia.
